Technical SEO Checklist: 20 Checks for a Stronger Website

Use this practical technical SEO checklist to improve crawling, indexing, speed, mobile usability, structured data, and search visibility.

A technically sound website gives every other SEO effort a better chance to work. Great content cannot rank consistently when search engines struggle to crawl, understand, or index it.

This technical SEO checklist covers the checks that matter most for a business website. It is designed to help you find priority problems without getting lost in low-impact warnings.

What is technical SEO?

Technical SEO improves the systems that help search engines discover, render, understand, and index a website. It includes crawl controls, page speed, mobile usability, site architecture, structured data, security, and duplicate-content management.

1. Confirm that important pages can be indexed

Search engines should be able to access every page that you want customers to find. Check that important service pages do not contain a noindex directive and are not blocked by robots.txt.

At the same time, keep private, duplicate, and low-value pages out of search where appropriate. The goal is not to index every URL. The goal is to index the best version of every useful page.

2. Check robots.txt

Your robots.txt file tells crawlers which areas they may visit. Look for accidental rules such as Disallow: /, which can block an entire website. Also confirm that important CSS and JavaScript files are not blocked when they are needed to render a page.

Remember that robots.txt controls crawling, not guaranteed removal from search results.

3. Maintain an accurate XML sitemap

An XML sitemap should contain canonical, indexable URLs that return a successful response. Remove redirected, duplicate, private, and broken URLs. Add new articles and key pages as they are published.

A sitemap helps discovery, but it does not replace internal links. Every important page should also be reachable through the website navigation or relevant content.

4. Use one canonical URL per page

A canonical tag identifies the preferred version of a page when similar URLs exist. Each indexable page should normally reference its own clean URL. Confirm that HTTP, HTTPS, www, non-www, trailing-slash, and parameter variations resolve consistently.

5. Find broken pages and redirect chains

Review internal links for 404 responses. If an old page has a close replacement, use one permanent redirect to the most relevant new page. Avoid chains in which one old URL redirects through several other URLs before reaching the destination.

Do not redirect every missing page to the homepage. An irrelevant redirect can confuse visitors and search engines.

6. Strengthen site architecture

Important pages should be easy to reach. A simple structure usually works best:

  • Home
  • Core service pages
  • Topic or resource hubs
  • Supporting articles
  • Contact and trust pages

Use descriptive internal links. For example, an article about organic growth should link naturally to the SEO strategy and services page, not through vague text such as "click here."

7. Improve Core Web Vitals

Measure real-user performance where possible. Focus on:

  • Largest Contentful Paint: how quickly the main content appears
  • Interaction to Next Paint: how quickly the page responds to interaction
  • Cumulative Layout Shift: how visually stable the page remains

Compress oversized images, reserve image dimensions, reduce unnecessary scripts, and avoid loading every animation or widget before the main content.

8. Test mobile usability

Google primarily evaluates the mobile version of a website. Check that text remains readable, buttons are easy to tap, menus work with keyboard and touch input, and content does not overflow the screen.

Test forms, pop-ups, tables, and embedded tools on small screens rather than checking only the homepage.

9. Use HTTPS consistently

Every public page and asset should load securely. Redirect HTTP URLs to HTTPS, remove mixed-content requests, and keep certificate configuration current. Security is both a trust requirement and a basic technical foundation.

10. Improve titles and descriptions

Every important page needs a unique, descriptive title and meta description. Put the primary topic near the beginning, but write for a person deciding whether the result is useful.

Avoid repeating the same title across multiple pages. Two pages targeting the same intent can compete with each other.

11. Keep heading structure clear

Use one main H1 that describes the page. Organise supporting sections with H2 and H3 headings. Headings should create a useful outline, not simply make text look larger.

12. Add relevant structured data

Structured data can help search engines interpret authors, organisations, articles, breadcrumbs, services, and FAQs. Use only schema that matches visible content. Validate the markup and remove misleading properties.

13. Make images search-friendly

Use descriptive file names and useful alternative text. Compress images and choose modern formats where practical. Decorative images should not receive keyword-stuffed descriptions.

14. Prevent thin and duplicate pages

Filter pages, tags, archives, and tracking parameters can create many near-identical URLs. Decide which versions serve a real search need. Consolidate overlapping pages and use canonical tags or noindex controls where appropriate.

15. Review JavaScript rendering

Confirm that titles, headings, links, article text, and structured data are present when a page is rendered. Critical content should not depend on a delayed browser request when it can be delivered with the initial page.

16. Use descriptive URLs

Keep URLs short, readable, and stable. A useful URL communicates the topic, such as /blog/technical-seo-checklist. Avoid dates or unnecessary folder levels unless they are important to the content.

17. Fix orphan pages

An orphan page has no useful internal links pointing to it. Link related articles to each other, connect articles to service pages, and include important resources within an appropriate hub.

18. Monitor crawl and indexing changes

Track coverage, page indexing, search queries, and unexpected drops. Compare changes against releases, redirects, content updates, and server incidents. A single snapshot is less useful than a consistent trend.

19. Audit regularly, not constantly

Run a focused technical review after major launches, migrations, design changes, or URL updates. For a stable small website, a monthly or quarterly review is often more useful than reacting to every automated warning.

20. Prioritise by business impact

Fix problems in this order:

  1. Pages blocked from crawling or indexing
  2. Broken templates and server errors
  3. Duplicate or conflicting URLs
  4. Slow or unstable key pages
  5. Weak internal linking and metadata
  6. Minor validation warnings
